SCHOOL-WIDE
POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR (SWPBS)
At Maramba Primary School, we use the School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) framework to enhance the social, emotional, behavioural, and academic outcomes of our students. Introduced at MPS in 2025, SWPBS helps create a positive learning environment by giving teachers and students more time to focus on building strong relationships and engaging in effective classroom instruction.
SWPBS is embedded in our core school values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, and Relationships. These values are explicitly taught during wellbeing sessions and clearly outlined in our Matrix of Expectations, which is displayed in every classroom and frequently referred to in daily interactions with students.
Teaching Positive Behaviour
All students are explicitly taught the positive behaviours we expect them to demonstrate. This teaching approach mirrors how we teach academic skills:
Staff introduce and model expected behaviours.
They discuss the importance of these behaviours with students.
Staff demonstrate appropriate social skills in real-life contexts.
Positive behaviour is acknowledged, encouraged, and reinforced through ongoing supervision and feedback.
Teachers continually reflect on their practices to ensure every student has the support they need to succeed.
To reinforce these behaviours, students earn stickers when they demonstrate them both inside and outside the classroom. Research shows that teaching, recognising, and rewarding positive behaviour strengthens social skills and plays a vital role in a student’s overall development.
How Families Can Support
Consistency between home and school is key. When families and schools work together to promote the same behaviours, students thrive. SWPBS supports all students in learning to self-manage their behaviour, and family involvement is a crucial part of its success. A strong school-family partnership leads to better outcomes for students—together, we can build a positive and respectful learning community.
