ENGLISH
At Maramba Primary School, students engage in 10 hours of English each week, recognising the critical role English plays in supporting learning across all areas. We are committed to using evidence-based practices to ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed and thrive.
Our approach is built on the explicit and systematic teaching of essential knowledge and skills. This foundation enables students to become confident and capable readers, writers, and communicators, with a deep understanding of the structure and function of the English language.
We focus on six key areas that underpin effective reading development:
Phonological Awareness
Phonics
Fluency
Vocabulary
Sight Word Recognition
Comprehension
Our Structured Approach to Reading and Writing Includes:
Initial screening for phonological awareness and phonics skills
Explicit instruction in phonological awareness and phonics
Automaticity training for irregular and high-frequency word recognition
Guided practice to build reading fluency
Targeted vocabulary development, including structured morphology lessons
Direct teaching of comprehension strategies
Explicit instruction in comprehension questioning techniques
From Years 1 to 6, students also engage with a wide range of novels by diverse authors, with all texts provided by the school to support equitable access to high-quality literature.
Our Library
Our libraries are a great space for students to read and explore a variety of texts. Every class will visit the library weekly and can borrow books to take home and enjoy. The students are guided to choose books that are appropriate and exciting by their classroom teacher or peers.
