MATHS
At Maramba Primary School, students take part in at least six hours of Mathematics each week. Our goal is to help students become confident and capable mathematicians by making sure they have a strong understanding of the basics. When students know their number facts well, they are better prepared to tackle more complex maths problems.
We teach all maths concepts clearly and step-by-step so that students can build their skills over time. Our lessons focus on the four key areas of mathematical learning: Understanding, Fluency, Problem Solving, and Reasoning. These are built into all lessons from Foundation to Year 6 to support students in thinking clearly, solving problems, and explaining their thinking.
We use a teaching approach called CPA – Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract. This means students first learn using hands-on materials, then pictures, and finally numbers and symbols. To support daily revision, we use New Waves Mental Maths books, helping students participate in daily retrieval practices of key mathematical skills.
Each week, students learn across all areas of maths: Number, Algebra, Space, Measurement and Geometry, Statistics and Probability through a spiral curriculum. Rather than teaching one topic at a time for long blocks, we revisit and build on each area throughout the term. This helps students remember and master what they have learned, turning short-term knowledge into long-term skills.
