We are a Human Literacy School Community

What is Human Literacy?

As a Human Literacy School Community we are committed to improving student learning and wellbeing. Human Literacy focuses on our knowledge of being human, and allows us to use this knowledge to transform our learning and our lives. It is the essential foundation to progressive and sustainable life-long learning and wellbeing.

Young people are facing more challenges in their lives now than ever before, no matter their background and socio-economic status. Changes this century to technology and media have added new complexities to the way we relate to others, our world and ourselves. If we provide our students with ongoing and rich Human Literacy learning opportunities, based on solid research, this will assist them greatly to understand themselves, their ability to relate to their world, and how they can make positive changes and choices that will help them lead healthier and more successful lives.

Human Literacy goes beyond social and emotional learning. It harnesses the importance of a values based education, promotes safety (including Cyber safety), nurtures a growth mindset, and supports students to be innovative thinkers and actioneers. Human Literacy consists of 5 key elements: Social, Physical, Intellectual, Cultural and Emotional (known as the S.P.I.C.E.® elements).

Socially, students need to know how to develop affirming relationships, be a leader and a team player, as well as become a proactive citizen online and offline.

Physically, students need to be able to make healthy choices that support body and neurological development.  We need students with an environmental conscience that can act as environmental change-makers.

Intellectually, students need to be innovative and reflective problem solvers that are able to respond to new challenges, set values-based goals and achieve success.

Culturally, students need to know that they matter, and develop a growth-mindset that will support their attitude, identity and a positive outlook.

Emotionally, students need to be able to understand their emotions, to be able to bounce back from difficulties and develop emotional intelligence that will assist them to flourish.

All staff lead Human Literacy across our school with the support of our Education and Wellbeing Consultant Georgina Pazzi from Edumazing. We have already seen the enormous potential of this pedagogy, through the positive climate teachers have developed, the increase in student learning engagement and the growth in academic achievement.

We look forward to continually ensuring our students thrive in their learning and wellbeing.
